Online Resources for Busy Restaurant Owners

A question was submitted to one of the websites that I write for, All Experts, asking ways that busy restaurant owners can keep up with trends, information and subjects of interest on a daily basis. On the face of it, that may seem like an easy question to answer. The Internet is an obvious solution, but as we all know the ‘net has grown into a 500 pound gorilla with a lot of useless data mixed with pertinent results. The time it takes to sort through the junk makes it hard to find the jewel.

One tool is Google Alerts. This neat little gadget saves a lot of time sifting through stagnant and repetitive web page results. Instead of doing general Google searches, you are emailed the daily new items Google spiders pick up for any subject. For instance, if you want to keep up with daily postings about “Kobe beef”, you would set up a Google alert for that term. Each day Google will send any material with those words, “Kobe beef”, to your email address.

My recommendation is to be as specific as possible. In the example above, if we just use the term “beef”, you would get results that are just as difficult to wade through as a general search engine search. The data may be old and repetitive.

Two other resources are Articles Base and Ezines. Both of these sites have extensive libraries of articles written on a wide range of subjects from the mundane to complicated engineering components (including all facets of the restaurant business).

Search engines used to be the restaurant owner’s source of information, but today they have become less helpful – unless, of course, you like paid advertisements, popups, consultant junk and hours sorting through old web pages. Try some of the in depth search tools available to filter out useless returns.

Did this really come from the Phillipines Business Online magazine? Makes sense, but it’s easier to quote something American!
